Blu-ray two-year sales figures outperforming DVD
The holiday season must have just ended, because Sony is being provided with great news at every possible turn. If the company isn't reporting increased sales of its PlayStation 3, its soon-to-be standard format Blu-ray is racking up milestones of its own, reportedly outperforming DVD in comparison to its first two years on the market at a rate of 2 to 1.
According to statistics compiled by EngadgetHD and Pali Capital's Richard Greenfield, DVD players achieved 1.2 million players sold over the course of its first two years on retail shelves. However, this number is barely a dent in the estimated 2.5 million Blu-ray players that have been sold within the same life span. Perhaps more impressive is the fact these numbers do not take into consideration the PlayStation 3, which is Blu-ray compatible out of the box.
As stated in the past, Sony has done a marvellous job utilizing its console as a Trojan Horse for its new standard in format preference. It's only a matter of time until every Blockbuster is lined in Blu, and the industry will have Sony to thank for that.
