MK team abandoning Midway? (CVG 6/4/09)
Speculation is building over the future of Midway's Mortal Kombat, as its current development team are rumoured to be seeking asylum from the crumbling publisher.
Specifically, unnamed sources from within have told news site Kotaku that Midway's MK team are "in active talks" with other publishers, with the aim to push forward a sale of the franchise. Midway had previously said it was pondering selling off the MK rights.
The MK team are, according to sources, angered by Midway's reluctance to pay promised bonuses despite Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe meeting its sales targets. This has already been disputed by a Midway representative, who stated that Midway is not withholding any owed payment, yet "it's the unsecured creditors committee that is refusing to allow us to pay them. They're the ones holding that up."
The position of the MK team remains pure speculation for now. No executives or game designers have been cited. Edge has contacted Midway for comment.
