Apple Sued for Exploding iPod (IGN 13/3/09) Empty Apple Sued for Exploding iPod (IGN 13/3/09)

Normally the only time our Apple devices make us hot is when we're looking at photos of ourselves on the screen, but unfortunately for one kid in Ohio, his iPod burn was real. According to a lawsuit filed against Apple, a mother is suing the company after her son's iPod touch allegedly exploded in his pants, causing burns to his leg. Accident, or some self-destruct beta test for the new iPhone?

The suit explains that the iPod touch was sitting in the off position inside the boys pants, when a part of it popped and caused a burning sensation. The boy then stood up and looked down to see that his pants had actually caught on fire.

"Plaintiff A.V. immediately ran to the bathroom and took off his burning pants with the assistance of a friend," reads the complaint. "On said date and at said time, the Apple iTouch had burned through Plaintiff A.V.'s pants pocket and melted through his nylon/spandex underwear, burning his leg."

Afterward, the boy was brought to a doctor, where he was diagnosed with having received second-degree burns. "He continues to suffer from both physical and mental conditions which will cause him to suffer pain, mental distress, emotional distress, and otherwise for the rest of his life," reads the lawsuit.

As a result, his mother filed suit against Apple and 10 employees from the Apple Store they purchased the iPod Touch from, seeking $75,000 for compensatory damages and an additional $75,000 for punitive damages.

At first sight of this story, we were a little hesitant to believe that a powered down electronic device could explode in such a manner. Normally it would require an intense heat to get it to blow up and discharge like that, and if that was the case, the boy would have definitely felt that burning sensation emitting form the touch well before the device blew. Yet, it's hard to go against a doctors findings, unless he's a doctor of choral music and not of medicine.

So our recommendation is to keep your iPod touch in your back pocket from now on, because if it does explode, at least you'll get a good spanking out of it while strangers try to put out the fire, pervert.
