75% of parents worried about game content (CVG 27/2/09)

Three quarters of British parents are concerned about videogame content and the same amount want an independent regulator to oversee what goes into games.

That's according to a new online survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of the British Board of Film Classification, which canvassed the views of 2143 adults (1329 parents) between February 9-11.

The government's currently in the process of deciding whether, as recommended by Tanya Byron, it will ask the BBFC to rate all games for players over the age of 12, or if it'll allow the games industry to continue to regulate privately via PEGI classifications.

These are the key findings of the YouGov survey:

* By 74 percent to 7 percent parents are concerned about the content of some videogames.
* By 79 percent to 6 percent parents think videogames may affect the behaviour of some children.
* By 74 percent to 5 percent parents believe videogames should be regulated by an independent regulator.
* By 77 percent to 4 percent parents believe videogame ratings should reflect the concerns of UK parents.
* By 82 percent to 3 percent parents believe it would help them if videogames used the same ratings as films and DVDs.
