There's a point in the development cycle of a game which many developers dread and, at the same time, look forward to: the review phase, when the games press casts a critical eye on the product of years of hard work and renders a verdict. For Killzone 2, that moment has arrived.

In the past few days, Killzone 2 has garnered excellent reviews from games media throughout the world, netting a couple of Editor's Choice awards in the process. Naturally, we're ecstatic about the overwhelmingly positive reception, and we'd like to take this opportunity to share some of our favorite reviews with you. It's hardly a complete list, as new reviews seem to pop up every hour - but feel free to add any missing reviews you come across in the comments.

US/UK

* 1UP.com: A
"With its unparalleled graphics, incredibly well-paced single-player campaign and in-depth multiplayer offerings, Killzone 2 has established its place among top-tier console shooters. Expectations on Killzone 2 had reached ridiculous proportions; here's one of those cases where the game actually lived up to them."

* Cheat Code Central: 4.6/5 (must buy)
"If you're a PS3 fanboy and were a little bit jealous because your 'Xbot' friends were loving it up with Gears of War 2, don't worry too much. Killzone 2 is every bit as engaging as that title is. In fact, the story and characters are much more interesting and, dare I say, the graphics are even better."

* ComputerAndVideoGames.com: 8.7/10
"Spectacular from start to finish. It doesn't innovate (and no co-op is a cop out) but its visual prowess and insane action make Killzone 2 unmissable."

* Eurogamer.net: 9/10
"Killzone 2 is a taut and muscular game, a shooter that gives back more than you put in, provided you have the intestinal fortitude. It may take its time revealing its true depths and pleasures, but the journey is well worth taking. Between Killzone 2's unforgiving grit and Resistance 2's alien-bursting excess, the PS3 finally has both ends of the shooter spectrum covered in grand style."

* FrictionlessInsight.com: 4.5/5
"Killzone 2 is undoubtedly the best World War II shooter I've played that isn't set during World War II."

* G4TV.com: 5/5
"Probably the tastiest part of the Killzone Cocktail is the Multiplayer. Imagine if Call of Duty 4 and Team Fortress 2 had a baby, which they then abandoned and as a result had to learn a few new tricks to survive. That's what Killzone Multiplayer is like."

* GameDaily.com: 9/10 (excellent)
"After slaughtering hundreds of Helghast with an M82 Assault Rifle, shredding enemy ships with a gun turret and unleashing a barrage of rockets onto anything that moved, we're happy to report that Killzone 2 is the PlayStation 3's premier first person shooter, a glorious and brutally intense ride through hostile territory wrapped in a Hollywood-style presentation."

* GamePro.com: 5/5, Editor's Choice
"Gamers have been waiting for the follow-up to the vastly underrated Killzone for a while now but the folks at Guerrilla used the time wisely, crafting an amazing FPS game that PS3 owners can crow about. With top-notch graphics, fantastic single- and multiplayer modes, Killzone 2 has pretty much everything a PS3 shooter junkie could need."

* GamerNode.com: 9/10
"If you own a PS3 and enjoy FPS titles, Killzone 2 is a must-buy."

* GamesRadar.com: 9/10 (awesome), Featured Review
"In the four years that we've known about it, Killzone 2 has been all but defined by one incident, so let's get this out of the way right off the bat: yes, Killzone 2 lives up to the infamous 'target footage' clip that roused legions of skeptics at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo. It even surpasses it, although if you've been following the game over the last few months, you probably know that already."

* GameSpy.com: 4.5/5 (great), Editor's Choice
"Killzone 2 manages to stand out from the pack thanks to its superb graphics and unique setting."

* GameTrailers.com: 9.2/10
"It may be tough to get into, but once it gets its hooks in it won't let go."

* GameZone.com: 9.4/10, Editor's Choice
"Killzone 2 injects an adrenalin rush into a visceral and challenging FPS experience."

* GamingHeaven.net: 96%, Driver Heaven Heavenly Gold Award
"A classic which will go down in the history books as one of the greatest Playstation 3 games of all time."

* GamingNexus.com: A, Gaming Nexus Editor's Choice
"Killzone 2 sets new standards for graphics while providing a solid story with interesting characters."

* HEXUS.gaming: 9.5/10, HEXUS.gaming Editor's Choice
"Killzone 2 is a gritty and profound experience that I won't forget in a long time."

* IGN: 9.4/10 (outstanding), IGN.com Editor's Choice Award
"The single-player experience is a truly enjoyable campaign across the Helghast home world that will test your skills, particularly on the higher difficulty levels, and the game simply looks phenomenal for a console shooter. But perhaps the strongest segment of the game is the extremely deep multiplayer, which gives seven basic classes with which you can create your own customized super-soldier after performing your class-specific duties."

* IGN UK: 9.2 (outstanding), IGN.com Editor's Choice Award
"Guerrilla has pushed the boundaries of what we've seen on PlayStation 3 by creating an all-action shooter that's far closer to the original E3 teaser trailer than we could ever have imagined. It's not perfect, sure, but it's arguably the best FPS on PlayStation 3 and one that is, in this reviewer's opinion at least, superior to Resistance 2."

* Jolt.co.uk: 96%
"To say Killzone 2 is an intense shooter is to do Guerrilla Games a great disservice. From the moment Sev joins the invasion and trains his sights on Helghan shock troops pinning down marines on a ravaged dockland beachhead, players will know that 'intense' falls some way short by way of description."

* Kikizo.com: 9/10
"We've been Killzowned."

* OCModShop.com: 5/5
"Sony and Guerilla games have combined to produce the first must have game for 2009. Killzone 2 is a non-stop thrill ride that is easily the best first person shooter developed for the Playstation 3 console."

* PCWorld.com: 90%
"Yes, Killzone 2 looks good. Startlingly good. As good as you've heard, and then some."

* Play Magazine: 93%
"A pure, stripped-down, focused shooter that handles the fundamentals of firstperson violence better than any other titles before it, while also managing to be the best-looking game on the PS3 by quite a margin."

* PlayStation: The Official Magazine: 10/10
"It's true that Killzone 2 is filled with moments that can handily be described as inspiring awe. Each scene is incredibly well detailed, from the gaps in jerry-rigged cover points letting you sneak in a killing headshot to scarred and scratched textures, the planet feels entirely believable... Without a doubt Killzone fans, action and shooter fans of any stripe will instantly tag this sequel as a powerful contender for best game of 2009." [Feb 2009, p.38]

* PlayStation Official Magazine UK: 9/10
"Visually it's so far ahead of anything else out there it shatters your expectations... This is a PS3 showing what it's truly capable of and delivering a landmark piece of explosive entertainment you can't afford to miss." [Feb 2009, p.88]

* PlayStation Universe: 9.5/10
"Dictionary definition, 'Epic': Heroic and impressive in quality; surpassing the usual or ordinary; majestic; impressively great; Killzone 2."

* Play.tm: 96%
"Considering the worth of a lengthy campaign offering genuine challenge, thrilling local multiplayer with A.I. bots, and a layered online multiplayer component that's likely to be PSN's main point of attraction for the foreseeable future, it's clear Killzone 2 has taken the ever-so-popular wheel, slapped a gorgeous chrome rim on it, drastically reduced its tire profile, and applied a sense of balance never before felt on a wheel. Why then would anyone want to reinvent the wheel when the damn wheel never looked so good or rolled so well?"

* PSXExtreme.com: 9.7/10
"Ultimately, we have a game that strikes the perfect balance between a single-player and multiplayer experience. Where almost all current FPS games boast a multiplayer component that is far and away better and more satisfying than the single-player experience, Killzone 2 boasts a single-player campaign that is every bit as much fun as the multiplayer - and that is truly a rarity."

* Skewed & Reviewed: 4.5/5
"Sony and Guerilla games have combined to produce the first must have game for 2009. Killzone 2 is a non-stop thrill ride that is easily the best first person shooter developed for the Playstation 3 console."

* Spong.com: 94%
"The gameplay packs punches you can almost feel and comes side-armed with a rounded multi-player aspect, cocked and with the safety off."

* TotalPlayStation.com: 9/10
"If you own a PS3, you need to own this game. Period"

* TotalVideoGames.com: 8/10
"Undoubtedly a visual masterpiece that proves the PS3 does have the power to carry the format forwards, Killzone 2 is a wonderfully solid and entertaining first-person shooter."

* VideoGamer.com: 9/10
"Two years into the console's life cycle, the undoubted graphical potential of the machine has been realised - Killzone 2 unleashes the power of the PS3 - nothing on any console comes close."

* Wired.com: 9/10
"While Killzone 2 does walk on mostly well-trodden ground, it does so with a keen attention to style and detail, pushing beyond the gray-and-red color schemes that define its competition while encouraging gamers to put a little bit of thought behind every bullet they hurl."
