Tomb Raider Underworld sales disappoint (CVG 9/1/09)

Post by VampiricPadraig on Fri Jan 09, 2009 2:06 pm

Eidos has said that sales of Tomb Raider Underworld have failed to live up to its expectations.

While the publisher estimates the game has sold 1.5 million copies since releasing on November 18 last year, which is by no means peanuts, it's hardly a stellar performance for a title that was launched on almost every platform under the sun.

Eidos said it was "pleased" by the game's showing in key European territories, where it "performed well against both competitive products and recent iterations of the franchise", but that on a global basis sales fell "below our internal forecasts, primarily due to a lower start in North America".

To put Underworld sales into some sort of context, fellow big multiplatform release FIFA 09 has moved over two million copies in the UK alone since October 3, while PS3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet has shifted 1.3 million units since November 5 (via MCV and PSU). Is this finally the end for Lara?

Based on the Tomb Raider figures, and the performance of other games, Eidos now expects its full year revenues to be in the range of £160m-£180m, down £20 million compared to previous estimates.

Looking ahead, Eidos said that it was "encouraged by the positive reaction to our forthcoming Batman: Arkham Asylum videogame". Which to be fair, does look the bollocks.
